CIE DE2000 (ΔE00) formula, which recommended by Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE). It's widely used around the world. How to understand it and use it properly?
Compared with CIE LAB (ΔEab*) formula which lack of visual uniformity (CIE Technical Report: Colorimetry, 2004), ΔE00 calculates color difference more precisely in green area, it’s an improved version of ΔEab*.
ΔL’, ΔC’ and ΔH’ are lightness difference, chroma difference and hue angle difference of a pair of color data, respectively. RT is a function to reduce the interaction between chroma and hue in blue area. SL, SC and SH are functions to calibrate the absence of visual uniformity of CIE LAB formula. KL, KC and KH are correction parameters of environment. There are two widely use combinations of (KL, KC, KH): CIE DE2000 (1:1:1) (CIE technical report: improvement to industrial colour-difference evaluation, 2001; Luo et al, 2001; Ghinea et al, 2010) and CIE DE2000 (2:1:1)
The DE2000 formula takes into account the different sensitivities of our eyes to different colors.
For example, we see very small color differences in pastel colors and near-neutral gray, while there should be a very large color difference before we notice it in very saturated colors.
A DE2000 of 1 = a just perceptual color difference, no matter what color we see
Compared with CIE Lab formula, the CIEDE2000 formula is more complicated and more accurate. It redifines the caculation method of color difference so that the results are closer to the evaluation of human eyes.On the basis of the original formula, the CIEDE2000 quotes three new factors, which are SL,SC,and SH,representing the degree of differences on the direction of lightness(ΔL*),chroma(ΔC*) and hue(ΔH*).Besides,it also includes three constant coefficient, namely KL,KC and KH.
CIE LAB describe color by using the uniform color change. But for some color evaluation, there are some difference between the sensitivity of human eyes and Δ E * ab. For non-uniform color space, CIE DE2000 is more consistent with human vision .But the color discrimination range around the hue angle of 270 degrees is less distorted.
