I can tell you my personnel experience. I disregarded natural sciences since the first years of school because the teaching was based only on theory with no practical examples. This discouraged me and push me to the management and economics area.
In Europe my opinion seems to be consensual, that is why European Union has a call dedicated to projects that may seduce people to pursue scientific careers: https://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h2020/calls/h2020-swafs-2016-17.html#c,topics=callIdentifier/t/H2020-SwafS-2016-17/1/1/1/default-group&callStatus/t/Forthcoming/1/1/0/default-group&callStatus/t/Open/1/1/0/default-group&callStatus/t/Closed/1/1/0/default-group&+identifier/desc
Dear Nuno, now I do get what you are saying, thank you for the advice, I do advice and make my students take up small research topics in groups. But I am not able to spark an interest in them to pursue more. It's sad because the education system and support runs on different terms and they get no supports or funds like in international universities. But I will keep trying and hope one day the system changes and that time my students be ready to push the limits.
