In Pakistan: Higher Education Commissions awards Productivity Allowances to researchers based on publications with impact factors and citations each year. For promotions and reach professor level definite numbers of Publications are prerequisites.

Dear Dr. Mushtaq, Thank you for the input, this situation is prevalent here in India too, but the grants are usually allotted based on reputation and credentials mostly, and due to that, small scale researches / freshers to the field are left out on most instances.

Experts please give your insights regarding how important publications are and what kind of publications are important, are all publications of equal importance or are only the ones published in indexed journals considered important or are the ones that are published in journals indexed to high rated data base the ones with significance.

Publications show that a researcher has been actively involved in research, and that he or she  is  capable of conducting research  (either independently or as apart of a group) and publishing  the results successfully. The quality of the journals such research is published in,  attest to the expertiseand international acceptance of said researcher. This is not always true but within the scientific community generally accepted as the golden rule

Journals are generally graded by Thompson Reuters impact factors, Scimago journal rank and Index Copernicus value to mention a few, these factors are used to measure the reach, acceptance within the scientific communityof each of these journals and they speak also to the quality of articles published in these journals and how they impact the scientific community. Also each specialty or subspecialty also ranks the respective journals. A researchers expertise is also measurd by the number of articles they have published in these high end journals (Springer, Wiley, Elsevier). So the goal of every researcher would be to get published in high impact factor speciality journals. This however is not a walk in the park; but with commitment , persistence and dedication these goal is achievable

For me , always all publications of equality importance , it's departing on information your looking for !

Publication contains collection/analysis of data.

Publications give awareness to what extent current research/development is going on  that particular field (especially what you are specifically searching). "What kind of publications are important" means we cannot generalize this item. My subject do not match to yours other subject may not match for me. So publication related to my work/subject is IMPORTANT for me. I search for that subject/topic in what kind of journal publish such articles/publications are available.

Generally person's interest depends on the field they like and carry research on that particular field. Each subject has its own importance. No one is less to others. I say each and every journal has its own importance. Not a single journal covers all subjects. We have 'n' number of journals. Subject wise people publish their research. Generally go for journals having high impact factor. Impact factor is a magic number in the sense depends on many factors like downloads/citations etc. etc.

Hello ADV. Ramadevi, Thank you for your valuable opinion regarding importance to publish and literature search. And I am in total agreement with you, publications are an important way to spread any knowledge we achieved throughout the course of a study.I not only give others the opportunity to find out regarding the particular outcome but also helps to relate and identify those grey areas which have caused certain hindrance during the study period and also helps to deduct the feasibility of such study in our region based on all such findings.

Publishing your work is important. Even if you are giving a piece to some smaller publication for free, you will learn something about your writing. The editor will say something, friends will mention it. You will learn. - Tim Cahill

Whether a publication matters or not is a multi-faceted question:

If you are a junior scientist, you should - and will - count the first paper as a very major advancement in your career - indeed your life! And it really is that important,

Your first published paper could make your career path straight, but only if your subject area is broad enough, and not too difficult to produce more results from, in near-by subjects. If you can "export" some of your original ideas to similar, but slightly different areas near to yours, you have a chance to produce a few more papers.

I'm actually not suggesting that producing similar papers in a sort of "pipe-line" always is a good idea; the oil in the pipe-line might not be sustainable for a very long stretch; you might also become bored with it, if the next paper is too similar to the first one. And that is how it should be - you are supposed to realize that there are more interesting - or harder, or prestigious, problems that you want to try your skills on. With the help of a good advisor, I'm sure you have a fair chance.

Rather then speculating which journals you should try, talk with your supervisor, or colleagues, if you do not already know where you should try your luck.

After a while you will notice that publications are not the only thing that drives your work - you want to understand more and more, and you want to make a difference in this world. Perhaps then it is time to take your solid knowledge, and see if you can apply it to something that never has been tried before. It's a risky business, but it can be worth it. Doing multi-disciplinary work with colleagues from other departments might then be the next logical step. And from there you're set on a long road that might lead to a Nobel prize! ;-)
