I want to upload a new version of my research proposal. I can remember to have seen an automatic attribution of a DOI to the accompanied data file, but I don't know how to retrieve it. Maybe it was deleted because initially I declared it as an article. But it was never published in a journal. Now, I want to upload a new version in form of a preprint. Should I delete the old version? And I would like to get the DOI before uploading because I want to add it to the preprint next to my email address so readers can retrieve the data later.

Your is question is more pertinent to all RG Users. The standard publications might have valid DOI that when you upload in RG will accept quickly. When you upload unpublished articles in RG will use to enter DOI or otherwise RG by itself will assign DOI for your article. I am not sure but while I was upload the unpublished article in RG showed DOI but I couldn't see the DOI thereafter. You can mail to RG Administrators to know the exact answer for question because it is a technical operational activities of RG. I don't think many of RG Users are not familiar about it. I am appreciating Prof even after retirement that your involvement in research etc. Keep it up as long as your health support. Wishing you have good health and cheer.

The DOI will not be assigned if the material is published since most publishers assign their own DOI to the article. RG will provide DOI to preprints, unpublished reports and thesis. To solve your issue, you may delete the existing listing and upload it again as a new entry to obtain a DOI for your work. You can always update your public file once the entry has been created.
Instead of DOI, Arxiv number is also well recognized for early work tracking, the Arxiv ID will be shown at the position where the DOI was located. Arxiv item may have DOI associated too.
