I am trying to analyse students data to determine the common characteristics of mathematics students. Cluster Analysis would be valuable to get these common characteristics. Any idea or any research article that clearly identifies the steps of using cluster analysis especially in determining the number of clusters as well as interpretation of cluster analysis output (SPSS)? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Best way is to use R for this question.
However, when you use SPSS, you can get a good idea when using the analysis TSC two step clustering. this will give you an answer, a first guess.
You don't have to go further with TSC, you can choose all different types of clustering methods in spss, but TSC gives you an answer (or first proposal) for the optimum number of clusters for your dataset.
