During my PhD I worked on it . First of all your questions seems incomplete to me (for what kind of materials/or specific properties). However, in general to get roughness, hardness, crack etc surface behaviour (in terms mechanical ) you have to follow data sheet of standard materials (say different kind of steel, polymer etc ). But in the case of a new materials/ materials fabricated 1st time in lab ....you have to go through hit and trial method.

Thu you have to optimise the parameters for your new materials.

Thank you so much, Dr. Tiwari. In my case materials are Ti-based alloys (metallic materials), and I am trying to explore properties on a small length scale using nanoindentation. So for known materials, you are suggesting to look for standard materials. Alright......

Based on nature of material, standards laid down pertaing to it. But if the material is new without standards then your judgement, experience, knowledge about material behavior, analytical ability etc.should pay off in optimizing the loading parameters.
