I have a panel dataset consisting of string names of countries. I want to generate specific ID for each country.
E.g.
Country ----------ID
A----------------------1
A----------------------1
B----------------------2
B----------------------2

For Stata, the package kountry by Rafal Raciborsky can help you convert your ISO codes and give an id for each country.
Suppose that your current country code is iso3, and you want to generate another id called "country_id". Then, you can type this command:
kountry country_id, from(iso3c) to(imfn)
