I am using Explicit Dynamic as an alternative to overcome some convergence difficulties in ABAQUS, and to perform quasi-static analysis. I have read the paper written by G.M. Chen et al 2015, (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0045794915001698) that explains in some details the advantages of using Explicit and factors affecting the accuracy of the dynamic approach. However, There are still things I need to understand. Would you please show us your experience regarding Explicit Dynamic?.

When using this kind of analysis with Abaqus, there is no usually definite rule such the one you mention, but you can list a few hints which usually helps in bringing your analyses to a better convergence and accurate problem. The main difficulty with explicit is that YOU decide on the convergence and accuracy which therefore means you should decide on :
- degree of error / accuracy of convergence
- understanding of the physics you are trying to model : what is your objective, how close you want to be, what scale you are working at and your own understanding.
- How you validate your analyses/results ? How you loop to verify your calculations ? etc ...
Therefore all these will influence your choices for the variables you mention.

I would also strongly recommend not to simply switch to Explicit unless you understand exactly why your implicit simulation does not converge and are sure that doing it explicitly will help. Furthermore, there are some restrictions in explicit (e.g. available element types) that may also affect solution quality.
