I have some data from my MSc dissertation which I am thinking of publishing but I am not sure how to publish a paper eg how to choose a journal, impact factor etc. Can anyone provide guidance?
Since you know which subject area you are in, you can make a simple web search with key words (a) the name of your field, (b) and the words "journal*" and "impact factor". You will then most probably find several sites that list those journals, and include quality measures. Simply find the lists that are relevant for your field, and then go to those journals to browse the latest issues in order to learn which journals appear to publish work similar to yours. Also check the editorial statements, because they reveal what kind of articles they like to publish.
You should be aware that the impact factor does not reveal all about a journal's quality - a journal which is broad and simple, such that journalists can dig up stuff (like some medical journals) can have very high impact factors, without them necessarily having papers with very strong scientific content. (Which does not mean that they are bad, just that they have popular appeal.)
So find out for yourself the type of journal that suits your needs and wishes.
1) You could look at the where the articles you cite come from. Then look at those journals and read the "about the journal" information and, if this was to your liking, also the instructions for authors
2) You can think about the audience you would like to read and then, somehow, get to know what they tend to read (for instance by looking at the journals some of them cite articles from, or publish in)
3) Look at other factors, such as impact, but also what they say about the time it takes to review your article etc.Remember most journals are not index by the JCR, and thus do not have an impact factor.
Most importantly; do not be discouraged by a harsh review or even a straight reject! Take the learning experience.
You can use journal finder software tool in elesvier and springer as well. that will provide list of journals according to your paper title and abstract
Happy Valentine day. I hope you full success in your M.Sc. dissertation, please follow the links below, it may be useful and I am ready to help and cooperate with you in future research.
