Hello ABAQUS users,
I am trying to do a dynamic/explicit compression simulation test of my assembly model using ANSYS. I have created two rigid bodies to compress my main body. Since it was a rigid body, I assigned a tetrahedral mesh to it. However, on running the job, I get the error "Element type C3D10 is not available in Abaqus/Explicit" which is because of the tetrahedral mesh. Since the mesh is tetrahedral and the mesh control type is free, the body appears in pink color. I want to change it to orange so that I can partition the rigid body and make it green for structured meshing. How do I do this? Thanks in advance!. I have attached a picture of my rigid body.

There are some facets that I cant recognize. in Abaqus, it is impossible to import a volume of a rigid body, in other words, it is allowed to import a surface of a specific body. in dynamic analysis, you can create a deformable part of the mentioned sphere and after importing it to the assembly make it rigid in interaction modulus, or at the beginning make a surface of a sphere and assign specific mass on it in the property modulus.

I think that a solution to your problem is to do as follows:
1- In Part Module, create a rigid sphere using "3D-discrete rigid-solid-revolution"
2- In Part Module, use "create shell: form solid" to change your sphere to a rigid shell. (to be able to import it in assembly)
3- In Assembly Module, import your parts.
4- In Mesh Module, use the default settings for mesh control which is "Quad-dominated, Free". If you mesh your part now, you will have R3D4 elements which are "4-node 3-D bilinear rigid quadrilateral".

The problem may be due to the fact that it is a sphere. In order to create a structured mesh with HEX elements, you need to partition the sphere into 8 sections using the "datum plane" partition command. Then you go to mesh control and it should be possible to select HEX structured. This video shows something similar:

I am not sure if you can do that in abaqus/explicit though.

Just attaching a previous answer for future references,
One simple rule for organised partitioning is keeping the number of edges of the partition and the element the same. I've illustrated the idea with a 2D model, using Tri, Quad and Quad dominant mesh designations. Same rule applies to 3D, i.e. a partition with 6 edges for a brick element. Sometimes you will need to specify seeding of the edges for customised meshes.
