Occurrence of an unintentional island in a DG interfaced power system network is due to many reasons and one of the reasons is occurrence of a fault.
There is sometimes confusion so as to how a fault event can be categorized as an unintentional islanding event or some other disturbance i.e. non-islanding event.
Can any here give an insight about my confusion?

One way is to analyse the voltage signal or current signal through advanced signal processing techniques or transforms such as Fortescue Transform. You can refer to my paper " Smart inadvertent islanding detection employing p-type μPMU for an active distribution network" published in IET GTD, where I have used Fortescue Transform to distinguish different scenarios of fault, capacitor switching, load connection and disconnection from unintentional island scenarios. Hope it clears your confusion.
