I am conducting a study to identify defects in cast and solidified alloys. I am analyzing the possibility of using Ansys Fluent to carry out the study. However, I am trying to calculate the pore percentage in the solidified alloy or the graph of the pore region. I would like to know if there is any way to perform this calculation using Ansys fluently.
The short answer is NO. Pores cannot form without inclusions, i.e. bifilms. Hence they are extrinsic; no bifilms, no pores. The extent of pore formation depends on the total damage given to the metal, negative pressure developed during solidification, amount of feeding possible and gas content. Total damage = the initial damage in the melt + damage given during mold filling. Hence you need to model the initial melt quality then model surface entrainment during mold filling. Currently these are quite complex problems that are.left out of modeling software. An alternative approach can be a probabilistic model that shows the regions where pore formation is most likely. That is the best you can do.

The short answer is of course yes, but of course it depends on what kind of porosity formation mechanisms you are after.
In my opinion, the simplest way of predicting porosity volume fraction would be using Niyama criterion. You simulate the cooling including Fluent solidification model including species tracking, and then post-process the results for Niyama criterion. See the attached paper for more information. Niyama criterion gives an estimation of porosity due to shallow temperature gradients. It doesn't consider other porosity formation factors apart from thermal history in a given point.
