To calculate the effective mode index in comsol, you must use mode analysis, just like the models in application library and the proper variable to call is ewfd.neff in comsol.
However, I don't know if there is, generally, an analytic relationship for nFSM. If there is any formal relationship, we can state it in comsol environment (in the local variables for example), but if it is related to spatial distribution of the field, where the field is weak enough, or anything alse, tell me the definition and I tell you how to implement it in comsol.
As mentioned by Morteza Maleki, the ewfd in mode analysis may help to calculate the V-parameter (effective index of the core region - effective index of the cladding region). Kindly, check.
