The value you want is determined by calculations based on the lattice structure and parameters of the 2-D plane. You can draw a picture of your crystal system to help you figure out this question (just as I had to do once long ago for a sapphire surface). These days, a host of computer programs can do the pictures for you when you have the coordinates of the atoms in the material.
