I am working on hofstede cultural dimensions using VSM94, so how to calculate the mean score on five-point scales (10 x answer 1, 24 x answer 2 ,14 x answer 3, 5 x answer 4, 1 x answer 5) as provided in the manual , using spss?
is it possible if I calculate the average of the four questions for each dimension using compute variable?
If I understood your question, you have a 5 point scale questions by which each respondent will choose one answer on the scale(min 1 and max 5 points). To calculate the mean score
First: Compute a new variable. Determine the values of your new variable by adding all the responses for each respondent. With that, you can determine the maximum and the minimum score which can also be easier for you to calculate range. Using the descriptive statistics in SPSS compute mean and SD of your new variable. Then, you can also check the normal distribution of this new numeric variable to decide which measure of central tendency to report.

2.Sum all the mean cores obtained and divide it by the number of observation to obtain the AVERAGE MEAN SCORE.
