Hey guys,
I need to calculate above ground biomass of maize and sorghum. I have the plant spacing, the planting density, and the dry weights of the leaves, stems, and grains. Additionally, I have the leaf area and the dry weight of the flag leaf.
For the yield estimation, I have all the above information, plus the thousand grain weight, the individual panicle dry weights, and the dry weight of a 20g sub-sample of grains.
I took 3 samples on a 5 meter transect every 2 weeks.
How can I do this? Thanks for your help!
You harvest the panicles, after each plant of an experimental plot will harvested by cutting the plant at the base and then dried. After drying, the samples will weighed and used to estimate the dry biomass. On the basis of the area of your experimental plot (where you harvest the panicles and plants) you can extract panicles and dry plant weight (biomass) per hectare (ha)
You have a lot of data but not all of the variables are needed to estimate the
above ground biomass and yield. Eg. you do not need leaf area nor do you need 1000 kernel weight.
Yield = Plant density / Ha * Average weight of plant
You have 90,000 plants per hectare and each plant weights 100 g DW
Yield = 90,000 * 100 = 9,000,000 g/ha = 9 Mg/ha = 9 ton/ha
Just obtain the mean dry weight of plants at the end of the growing season and convert this to a yield
Harvesting of the plants above the ground from the base , dry it and calculate the day biomass
