Dear Colleagues:

Good day and greetings from CSMCRI, India!

I am thankful to all those who have responded to my previous query posted in the list last year. We are pleased to inform that our work has recently been published at “Vegetos: An International Journal of Plant Research and Biotechnology” https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s42535-024-00906-3

Here we have studied the a leaf morphometry of Sargassum spp. from Indian waters, to find: (1) if there exists a difference in aspect ratio in leaves of different species; (2) the Length–Width Probability Region (LWPR) for various species; and (3) the extent of variation in the herbarium and fresh collection respectively. The assessment of leaf aspect ratio using secondary data, herbarium and freshly collected samples revealed species wise differences. Through this research, we intended to explore the possibility of introducing a simple, non-cumbersome and low skill set based technique for species differentiation in inventories targeted at amateur naturalists or citizen scientists of public supported scientific research. Nevertheless, such effort requires the collaboration of researchers from different countries to enhance the size of the study material, which will determine the accuracy, efficiency and implications of proposed method.

We in this study have studied Sargassum cinctum, S. swartzii, S. cenerium, S. vulgare, S. johnstonii, S. merifildii, S. plagiophyllum, S. ilicifolium, S. wightii, S. prismaticum, S. linearifolium, and S. tenerrimum (herbarium samples). Through this email, I seek the collaboration with researchers from different countries asking for the morphometric data (length and breadth) based on more samples (herbarium – historical (old) or fresh) of Sargassum tenerrimum from their respective regions.

Those wanting to join this initiative may write to me at [email protected] and we may discuss it further.

Look forward for positive reply.

With advance thanks,

Prof. Dr. Vaibhav A. Mantri, PhD
