Lots of challenges for vice dean of undergraduate students specifically for 1st year students who represent a range of challenges i.e. students do not understand what is university? taking drugs, smoking, sexual harassment, stealing, in addition to poor students, last minute preparations for exams, and insisting to go to the toilet during exam.

Today, education management by deans or vice deans, etc. will not be successful without making an intelligent use of students ' active participation in important educational decisions. It seems that a distributed leadership involving the students in decision making processes may create wonderful results.
Vice dean of undergraduate students give support and to manage and resolve escalated student complaints, review and standardize processes and policies regarding student complaints, create opportunities for student feedback, disability support services ..etc

They are big children in this age. I was not an official person, I just read lectures and understood that it is necessary to think about them as about my older children, but to speak with them as with adults.

Thank you for sharing us. I agree with you communion as a father or a mother can help in many cases. However, in case of taking drugs legal sanction is taking place. Although I see the student must go to the addiction clinics with sanctions.

One need to understand rising expectations of students in terms of interest for learning new topics, job profile and career. Their energy need to be channelised for learning process and keep them engaged in activities which will be beneficial in their studies and career later.
It is impossible to give a general recipe. However, there must be common principles. You should not divide them onto "losers" and "pets". Every outsider can reach succees, and every honors pupil sometime can demonstrate an unworthy trick. You must be calm, objective and honest. You do not have to be equal to them, same time you cannot stay into the position of a "big boss". (The ability to keep the right distance is one of the most important tasks). You must clearly explain to them, "what is good and what is bad" (V. Mayakovsky). They need to know what you will do in critical situations. Be sure you will be defeated sometimes, but this should not affect to your relationship to others. The situation of the vice-dean is not unique. It is difficult to be a boss in any team. It's easier for you in the sense that yours guys are more homogeneous by age. We have an army anecdote exactly for this situation. "Whose position is heaviest, the lieutenant's or the general's?" - "Of course the lieutenant's, since the general commands by smart people, but the lieutenant – by all sorts…". On the other hand, it is impossible to become a general without being a lieutenant.
