* An Alkaline Oxidation Method for Determination of Total Sulfur in Soils

Abstract

A rapid and precise method of determining total sulfur in soils is described. The soil sample is heated with alkaline sodium hypobromite solution to oxidize soil sulfur compounds to sulfate, and the sulfate thus formed is reduced to hydrogen sulfide by a modified Johnson-Nishita procedure and determined colorimetrically as methylene blue. The method gives quantitative results with pure organic and inorganic sulfur compounds, including amino acids, sulfonic acids, organic sulfates, sulfoxides, thioureas, sulfates, sulfites, sulfides, and elemental sulfur. It gives quantitative recovery of organic and inorganic sulfur added to soils and soil extracts, and its results with soils agree closely with those obtained by other methods proposed for total sulfur analysis of soils.

The easiest and fastest is to use the ICP-AES technique. This technique in the version with axial observation allows measurements of both total S and total P.

You should contact chemist analysts dealing with the analysis of aqueous samples, using such spectrometers, because the preparation of your samples will depend on several factors, such as their physical condition and chemical composition (not only how much sulfur and phosphorus they contain, and they are what form), but also whether they will be similar in composition or rather different, what are your metrological requirements (limits of detection and accuracy of results) and whether they can be achieved on a specific spectrometer.

I use the ICP-AES VARIAN Vista-Pro Axial spectrometer. Under standard excitation conditions with pneumatic nebulization, the detection limit (2 s) of sulfur and phosphorus is 0.1 and 0.01 mg / L, respectively, while with ultrasonic atomization, 0.01 and 0.001 mg / L.

If your water samples are pure and clear (no suspension), then just add some acid (hydrochloric for ICP-AES) or nitric acid (if ICP-MS is also to be used). And how specifically, it should be decided by a chemist analyst who will undertake the analysis. If your samples are not pure water samples, and you need results for other elements in addition to S and P, then the preparation is more complex.
