How the result of copy number variants be interpreted using real-time PCR techniques?

I am very new to the concept of copy number variants. Say for eample, If I wanted to look copy number variants in Salivary alpha amylase (AMY1 gene) using real-time PCR technique, how can we determine If there is a deletion or duplication?
