When Jimmy Carter was running the second time for Gov. (1971-1975) he visited the U. of GA Marine Inst. on Sapelo. He asked Dr. Jim Henry what geological matters needed attention. Jim asked requested that all the mapping for the Quad's should be completed and updated. GA Geol. Survey. Director Sam Pickering then made a coop agreement between State of Georgia and the USGS to complete the mapping as part of the GA DNR budget in Gov. Carter's years in office. In Gov. Perdue (2003-2011) administration the GA Geol. Survey was abandoned and subsumed into EPD.
