We know simulation processes are more available, cheaper and faster than doing experiment which requires more cost, time and complexity. There are many simulation software tool available for solar cell modelling numerically. But among them, most used simulator is SCAPS-1D. I want to know if it is reliable and I would be very grateful if some references can be provided to ensure its credibility.

The simulator SCAPS-1D is used to make many solar cell simulations which can be utilized to match the experimental work. And so, it can be used to reliably simulate the solar cells provided that they are one dimensional. It also agree with the simulation results from very powerful simulators such as the TCAD SILVCACO simulator.

Your question is very valid, I have a little experience to compare the SCAPS 1D results with experimental results. It completely depends on material and optical parameters, geometry and density of defects. It is art art more than science. Still I think SCAPS is very good software for solar cell simulation.
It is one of the most reliable tool for simulating Photovoltaic devices. I can show lots of Q-1 journal paper available done with this software. Either this or WxAMPS anyone can be used . They are both free and reliable.
SCAPS-1D software is reliable; I suggest you learn from the CdTe examples they give at SCAPS software: CdTe base, CdTe air-activated, and CdTe vacuum activated. It is a good idea to reproduce first the published results of Dr. Peter Nollet and Dr. Marc Burgelman.

Note: I do not recommend starting with novel materials. Most of them are not supported by experimental parameters.

For 1-D analysis, you can use the SCAPS-1D tool. As a beginner, you may start with the examples given in. def file. However, for optical analysis, you should go for LUMERICAL.
If you don't manipulate the input data in your favor, it's highly reliable as much as APSYS or Silvaco
