Drawing on my experience working with water and wastewater companies, sand filtration in wastewater treatment can remove 50-90% of larger microplastics. The efficiency is influenced by particle size and system design. Although effective for larger particles, sand filtration may have limitations in capturing smaller microplastics. The actual removal depends on factors such as sand particle size and operational parameters. Comprehensive microplastic removal may require additional methods.

it all depends, the chemistry of the water or wastewater to be treated should be well understood. Apart from the contaminant in question, the presence of secondary contaminants could affects the rate microplastics removal using sand filtration method.
