Impact factors are playing a pivotal role now a days in the age of competition. Good work or high impacts....??? How many modern techniques or simple yet novel breakthrough ....???? New idea or technique full molecular biology with same model organism.....??? Ya, molecular biology demands techniques, machines....
So, if any one want to apply for a PDF in European country/ USA, how do they screen (via fellowship scheme). If impact factors are counts, then at least how much impacts do ant one need???
I am working on DNA barcoding, phylogeography, genetic diversity, tissue culture and metal/nano toxicology of some High altitude Himalayan medicinal plants. If, I want to change my field to STRESS BIOLOGY, may I able to change my field??? Or, I would require some papers/ learn techniques on that field???
Or, research idea/interest will be a key factors in that???
Of course, impact factor is important, it is the only way that you have to demonstrate that your papers are good enough but not is the only important, at least to obtain a PDF. The really important is your background, if you control one or more techniques and if you have demonstrated enough knowledge on them (with you PhD, papers, congress contributions, courses, etc). Nowadays, enthusiasmic people are those that are being selected for all kind of open positions. And, of course, now it is the perfect moment for changing your field and opening your mind to new species, techniques, new labs with new people to meet and start to make new connections that are going to be so important for your career life. The most important is constructing you curriculum as better as possible and trying to sell yourself.
