In Nephrovit (the multivit tablet for dialysis patients ) there is only 500 micro gr to 800 micro gr folic acid but in some paper they recommend 5 to 15 mg folic acid per day . is there any need to add tab folic acid 5 mg to nephrovit or the folic acid in nephrovit is enough ?
In my experience 5 mg per os per day of folic acid are not enough to allow normalization of serum folic value. Conversely 5-methyltetrahydrofolate 15 mg per venam once a month does.
Depends on whether you are supplementing folic acid to prevent deficiency(from HD losses and poor nutrition) OR to treat/prevent hyperhomocystinemia( if you believe homocystine is a risk factor) . 500mcg/day will suffice for the former, 5-10 mg/d will be required for the latter. 15 mg/weekly folic acid (5mg after each dialysis procedure) is required to suplement its deficit or to treat hyperhomocysteinemia. Higher doses are not useful as the human body could not utilise them.
5 and up to 10 mg/day should be sufficient to treat the deficiency.
