You can check the portal after submission and I would suggest that if you see your paper still with the editor after a month or so then you send them a request through the portal. The first response is from the editor and a month should be sufficient for that in any case. Another piece of advice is not to send emails to the editor directly, use their portal system which is monitored and handled by the publishing house.
