I've been looking for software that simulates the integration of passenger and freight transportation systems. For instance, tools like Vissim and Visum primarily focus on modeling passenger transportation. However, I'm interested in simulating scenarios where individuals travel on buses while simultaneously transporting cargo during their trips. Any recommendations for software that can handle this kind of multifaceted simulation effectively?
You could add another demand segment for packages: the freight units would be treated as "persons" that try to "board" a public transport system. This should be good enough for most purposes. This concept does not work with Vissim, but you probably do not need that level of resolution anyway.
This does not work easily if you want to study limited vehicle capacity, which should only make sense with timetable-based assignments. Internally, a simulation might freely convert different demand segments, because it assumes that all of them refer to generic "people", so your freight units would compete with normal passengers for seats. I am not sure what the usual modelling here is. However, you could look for how other special-interest groups with dedicated capacities (wheelchair users or cyclists, for example), but it may well be a rather exotic topic.
Edit: Most likely you would have to duplicate the timetable, with one transport system for passengers and another transport system for your freight, but travelling at exactly the same times.
