Hi Bethany, it depends of many factors, for instance and most crucial is the previous fixation quality of the tissue, which is close related with the protein preservation of your interest. The other aspect to consider is the hydration of the tissue, in some cases it becomes deeply dehydrated, being not usefull anymore.

Indeed, the fixation quality and tissue hydration need to be taken into account for storage. For our laboratory, fixing with acetone and IHC staining is completed in one day. Then, the slides can be stored for a few days at 4 degrees before imaging. After imaging, storage in -20 degree Celsius is recommended for long term-storage. However, make sure the slides are stored in a sealed compartment and covered with foil to help prevent light exposure and frozen crystal formation. Hope this helps!

Dear Bethany, charged slides having 5-20 um unstained tissue sections can be stored in a pack for 6 to 12 months at -80 C easily and for 2 to 3 months at 4 C in a sealed bag.
