From what I have understood from your question, I would suggest that it would not be appropriate to keep your cells in culture for 2 months with continuous passaging. I am assuming that since you want to use K562 cells after 2 months for the experiment, you should freeze down these cells by gradual freezing technique (at -1°C /min) by using Mr. Frosty freezing container which is designed to achieve a rate of cooling very close to -1°C/minute, that is the optimal rate for cell preservation.
When you need these cells for the experiment, few days prior you thaw them from liquid nitrogen by a quick thaw method in a 37°C water bath. Propagate these cells for 2-3 passages and then use them for your experiment.
If you continuously keep passaging your cells in culture when not required, genetic instability begin to accumulate in these cells which you would not want. When you freeze the cells, you ensure that the cell stocks are as genetically as close as possible to the source material and at the same time you will also reduce the risk of contamination.
Malcolm NobreCan I keep K562 cells at the lab for 2 months while giving treatments for them? Because I am analyzing the results of two months of treatments of cells.
