Assume that someone is conducting a single case study research on university governance, which focuses on five governance dimensions. While the university as an entity is the unit of analysis, s/he wants to collect data from the university level, middle level (college/faculty/school), and lower level (department or chair) leadership through interviews.
Assuming s/he is applying stratified purposive sampling, how can s/he determine the overall sample size and the sample size for each stratum? Here is the population.
Top (university level) leadership= 27
Middle level (college/faculty level)=19
Lower level (department/chair)=73

If you don't want to assess probabilities or test hypothesized relationships then sample size doesn't matter except more is usually better than less. The usual recommendation for qualitative interviews is a sample size of 30. The minimum sample size for qualitative study can be 10 too – but it absolutely depends on how the recruited samples matched with underlying criteria.
Our general recommendation for in-depth interviews is to have a sample size of 20-30, if we're building similar segments within the population. In some cases, a minimum of 10 is acceptable – assuming the population integrity in recruiting.Aug 21, 2018
