Whatever you upload, you will be held responsible for it. If any copyright infringement occurs, they will turn to you and RG won't want to have anything to do with it. Having said that: they still try to get you to upload as much as possible, no matter what. Thats' the rub.
Anyhow, usually the author of a text will own all the rights, unless he has signed for exclusive publication with the publisher. If he has not, there should be no issue to repost the content here,. (Usually!) Some publisher, however, might argue, that the copyright might be violated by scanning their book or your share of it. They will point to layout and printing style. You could still post a word-document of your essay.
We might get into detail about that, but lest be clear: I am no lawyer and you can not hold me responsible for following my sugestions. Also we are scattered all over the place and different countries might have different laws and regulations, also I do not know about the variety of contracts with your publisher. Naturally your publisher would not want you to offer freely what the audience should buy. You should also keep in mind, whether you got actually paid for a certain essay (I would rather not repost that) and whether it might have a negative impact with the publisher you might want to work with in the future, no matter whether your posting poses a copyright violation or not.
I for my part post essays that fall under the following categories:
older essays, not immediately after publication
essays I have not been paid for individually
essays I am the exclusive copyright holder and have not agreed on otherwise with any publisher
essays I am exclusive author of, unless agreed on with co-authors
