Hello,

I have heard that the SARS-COV-2 virus attacks the hemoglobin molecule, but if this is the case, why do most infected people recover? Simply saying that the virus targets hemoglobin molecules does not explain much. I mean, an alternative explanation could be that the virus causes the red blood cells to become leaky, or that the virus somehow weakens the structural integrity of the membrane so that it ruptures during passage through the lungs. Yet, no matter what mechanism is postulated, there is still no good explanation for why only certain individuals die from the disease. The "underlying condition" catchall does not pass muster, either, since some healthy individuals also succumb.

Ventilators seem to do more harm than good. Perhaps the solution is something as simple as the pH of the blood or some other equally obvious facet of blood chemistry that has gone slightly awry.
