LSPR can be studied using noble metal nanoparticles in colloid form and through nanoparticle (of any shape and size) fabricated on a substrate through nanosphere lithography techniques. Can anybody give me any reference comparing the sensitivity in both the cases?
The sensitivity of the plasmonic nanoparticles depend on the surrounding dielectric environment. When it is in the solution, the particles are uniformly surrounded by the same dielectric medium, whereas the dielectric response of the fabricated particles differs, as they are on a substrate and only the upper portion of the particles are in contact with the dielectric medium. Hence here, need to consider cumulative effect of both dielectric medium and the substrate (if any). Not only that, in case of fabricated particles, make sure that the separation between particles is good enough so that inter particle effects on plasmonic behavior is negligible.
I think it will depend upon the interaction of the LSPR wave with the desired particles. The nanoparticle substrate would result in better interaction compared to nanoparticles in colloidal form as LSPR is much stronger near the surface. It will also depned upon the fabrication and surface positioning of the nanoparticles.
