I'm modeling a tube to plate connection with a concentrated horizontal load on the top point of the tube. I would like to know how does Abaqus calculate the maximum principal stress given in visualization tab. Also, can anybody guide me how to tally the value by a manual calculation? Appreciate your comments.

If you mean where to find maximum principle stresses in Abaqus , then it could be found as follows:
Locate the options that control the symbol field output variable.
From the main menu bar, select Result Field Output. Click the Symbol Variable tab in the dialog box that appears.
The Symbol Variable options appear.
Tip: You can also access these options by clicking the Field Output button in any dialog box in which it appears.
To see the complete descriptions of the variables listed, increase the width of the dialog box by dragging one corner.
-- in manual calculation you have two types of stresses
1- axial stress = P/A
2- flexural stress = M..Y/ I
then the element at the support will have a stress equal to the sum of these stresses
and this will be the maximum or principal stress
you have to use Mohr's circle to calculate principal stresses as manually, .
Principal stress/strains are nothing but eigenvalues of stress/strain tensor. All codes use the same method to calculate principal stress/strain. Refer to your solid mechanics text book
