I am working with Vibrational studies of poly atomic molecules. How does microwave spectrum helps in getting sturctural parameters like Bond length and bond angles?
The frequencies absorbed by molecules in microwave region depend on the rotational constants of the molecules, which are inversely related to the moments of inertia of the molecules. Moments of inertia depends on how the masses (atoms) are distributed in the molecule i.e. their structure. However as there are only three moments of inertia that could be measured, for a polyatmoic molecule, measuring the rotational spectra of several isotopologues (same molecule with atoms replaced by isotopes) will help in accurate determination.
