Very often sustainable development problems are left for natural sciences only, such as ecological, global warming problems, etc. What is your view of sustainable development from sociological, political science and public administration angles? I am not naïve - that is I understand the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach here, but what do you give for the students and research in more distant situations from natural sciences?
In the Third World, the "responsible" free market, also known as "Sustainable development", was analyzed from its implementation of the "prequel" in the Third World: the The Alliance for Progress initiated by U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1961, in the context of the Cuban revolution (1958-1959), and the "sequel" called the Washington Consensus (1989), in the context of the "end of communism".
You can see that in "Encountering Development: The Making and Unmaking of the Third World" (1995). Princeton: Princeton University Press, wrote by Arturo Escobar.
Also can see the serious limits of talk about "sustainable" in the middle of free market in The Development Dictionary: A Guide to Knowledge as Power (Wolfgang Sachs, Zed Books, 1992).

I think sustainable development is a very wide subject. Let me mention few areas:
Education, Public Governance & Management, Employment, Science & Technology Agriculture/Food security, Energy SMEs & Entrepreneurship,, Business and Markets ,Environment Taxation, Development, Health ,Trade, Economic Developments , Information Technology , Transportation, Economic Statistics , Urban, Rural & Regional Policy and even Nuclear Energy is also domain of sustainable development.
Levett (1998), Owens and Cowell (2002), Stimson etc (2006), Sagoff (2007), Lyytimaki and Rosenstrom (2008) refer to 3 dimensions of sustainable development: equity=society, environment and economy.
As we are familiar with the concept of limits to growth from Environmental Economics, natural resources are really restricted. Therefore, when we speak about the economic growth, 3 areas must be included such as society, economy and nature, involving Biodiversity concept.
Economic growth is a new idea of sustainable development. My main proposal for SD is composite appraising supportive progress (CASP).
My published Article: A Model for Incorporated Measurement of Sustainable Development Comprising Remote Sensing Data and Using the Concept of Biodiversity. Azniv Felix Petrosyan, Journal of Sustainable Development. Vol.3 No.2 2010: 9-26, where 3 dimensions of society, economy and nature with 6 themes each are presented in Petrosyan (2010). Currently, I am working on 12 sustainability indices highlighting that CASP is the tool to evaluate the economic growth.
Petrosyan (2010) presents 6 themes inputs to CASP model.
Each theme has its own branch indicators having contribution to the CASP.
Society is important as 1/3 dimension of SD/CASP because unemployment rate for educated persons is too high. Work distribution is not done properly throughout the world. Science is somehow bottle-necked, because the politicians don't make proper decisions to direct humans to be involved in the real progress of the economy. My way is to support governmental works. Each young student goes to university and further education can know for sure where to work. The stronger the politicians with the public administration involvements improve the economy of the country. Furthermore, proper education must be fitted in economy of the country. Knowledge is strong capital to be used in the progress of economy.

Hi,
one aspect of concern are the coordination and integration requirements of the different branches and levels of government. The holistic perspective of SD implies that concerns are integrated in all governmental activities. Political science and policy analysis has undertaken studies on how this can be achieved, e.g. the study of Strategies for Sustainable Developments.
Another aspect are the consideration of long term aspects and their implication for governance. Again, the institutions to ensure long term governance, e.g. the impact assessment of policies have been addressed in social sciences and particular political science.

From my point of view the most general understanding of sustainable development is developing not at the expense of something or somebody harmfully. It can be developing only to the plus side, but not the minus. For example, if some stratas of society are becoming better off (plus), but some are marginalized and excluded (minus), this is not sustainable development. From my point of view the role of public sector and public administration and their efficiency and effectiveness are having extreme importance for sustainable development, because private sector sometimes or often wants to run away from these problems or even resists sustainable development issues. Of course, there is corporate social responsibility, etc. but they can not fill all the gaps.
