Can anyone kindly share on how to prepare alcohol free chloroform? the alcohol free chloroform will be used for bromination of 3-acetylcoumarin. thank you in advance.
I agree with Andrei. I would also suggest that you find a copy of Vogel's Textbook of Practical Organic Chemistry (ISBN 0-582-46236-3). it gives three methods, including that proposed by Dr. Rogoza, for removing ethanol (alcohol) from Chloroform.
The other two are :
Shake the chloroform two otr three time with small volumes of concentrated sulphuric acid, thoroughly wash with water and dry over anhydrous calcium chloride or anhydrous potassium carbonate and distill.
Pass the chloroform through a column of basic alumina (Grade 1, 10g per 14 mL of chlororform). . This procedure will also remove traces of acid and water from chloroform.
