I think if there's an emergency it would be very important, as the urge to add an idea before I forget it or something, it's like running to the lab at midnight, u just know u can't sleep before u get the results...but I think i can make a phone call if I'm close to the students I'm supervising, like when we have a group or a friendship is growing amongst us...in other situations I would send a Facebook msg to the student or on WhatsApp or simply email them...I think although there is an emergency the student might find it weird and it would make me feel awkward too, so calling them would be my last option...

That's happened to me, both as a graduate faculty for a graduate student and as a research associate for a faculty member and as a graduate student calling my doctoral committee chairman, who was also the Vice President of Institutional Research for a major university. A contingency plan should be in place already if certain emergencies are anticipated for any reason. My philosophy as a graduate faculty member is to serve the student who is viewed as a team member of a learning experience and possible research that profits the university, community, and the stakeholders who might be benefiting from it. I am a professor emeritus with 20 yrs at one university and prior to that about 25 years in the field I working with government, business and industry, and institutions of higher education and other schools.
