I have checked the similarity index of my working paper, where many of the body references such as (Rahaman, et. al., 2019; Jones, 1998) are found as plagiarism? Why? Thanks
Md. Saidur - Accurate referencing is important in all academic work Referencing is the process of acknowledging the sources you have used in writing your paper, book, essay, assignment or any piece of work. You identify sources by citing them in the text of your assignment (called citations or in-text citations) and referencing them at the end of your assignment (called the reference list or end-text citations). When using someone else's work, you can either quote or paraphrase it to prevent plagiarism. However, if you do credit the original author correctly using an in-text citation or footnote citation and include the full source in the reference list, then you do not commit plagiarism. Plagiarism occurs when you use either without proper attribution. If you paraphrase another author's ideas in your own words then you need citation. If you copy verbatim another author's words then you need to put the copied text in quotes and include a citation.
But, Suppose, if I use your ideas as keep it as same, like;
Accurate referencing is important in all academic ............................... copied text in quotes and include a citation (Hussain, M. 2019). It will detect 100% similariy index and full of Plagiarism.
But when I use your ideas with different ways Like,
Reseaches need to use the exact citations..............................all the lines or quotes should be cited (Hussain, M. 2019). here the % should be zero.
In this situation, why the software find the citation (Hussain, M. 2019) as plagiarism.
Md. Saidur - Two conditions are very essential for avoiding plagiarism: 1) Paraphrasing - Paraphrase means to re-write a phrase or sentence with the same meaning but using different words. At the outset, it is very important to differentiate between good paraphrasing and bad paraphrasing. Good paraphrasing is close to creative work but bad paraphrasing is the distorted use of words of the original author. It can be easily traced by comparison with the original source and is subject to copy right violation. In good paraphrasing, the material rewritten is like an abstract of the original material copied. This is possible by reinterpretation and changing the ordering of words by reorganizing the material but keeping the essence intact. 2) You need to be cautious about one thing that checking the manuscript or thesis or paper at more than one time for plagiarism increases the chances of plagiarism. It is better to check your thesis or paper for plagiarism only at the designated place of your institution and that too only at the time of submission to be at the safer side. Dupli Checker is one of the most effective free plagiarism detection tools on the Internet. A number of other plagiarism soft-wares exist like PlagAware, PlagScan, Check for Plagiarism, iThenticate, PlagiarismDetection.org, Academic Plagiarism, The Plagiarism Checker, Urkund, Docoloc etc. which are very useful but 100 per cent detection is still considered a problem. I think that similarity check or plagiarism check soft wares can't be fair in all cases unless as a rule all the cases are checked by only one software. But the problem is that institutions mostly use more than one software for plagiarism check.
