Mentoring students on their research projects is a professional responsibility of all university/college professors with critically important functions such as sharing knowledge and skills, and overseeing the students' research work. Serving as a role model, the mentor assures appropriate training and skills and does hand-holding through various steps of the research process. They help determine the focus, scope, and feasibility of proposed research.

Of course it does. It is not only a role but a responsibility at the same time. As a supervisor, it is an innate nature that we mentor students in their researches. Who could make them motivate to follow up their researches but the supervisor? He is responsible in guiding the students every step of the way until they successfully finish it and defend it in front of the panel of examiners and of course to pass the oral defense in flying colors. It is a challenging job to guide students in their researches because some might falter along the way, yet again, support and a bag full of patience and perseverance is necessary to accomplish such daunting task.
Greater role, help your scholars and cooperate with them. Give your extra and care for them and see the difference. Generally, what happens that supervisors maintain a gap with the scholars and this creates a problem and they are not fully able to express themselves. This hinders the whole research process. I like dialogue based guidance so that scholars develop critical thinking and judgement and are able to raise questions and seek answers and help even beyond official timing. Infact, it is a good thing to write academic papers jointly with scholars, thus monitor and act as a mentor for your scholars. I firmly believe that the research supervisor is the key person in a student's research work. When students work closely and effectively with their graduate supervisors, they will improve the quality of their dissertations or theses and their educational experiences.
The word supervisor tells us that he/she is expert in the field and must play a supervisory role. The output of the work is a function of the two candidates: the student and the supervisor. At the end of the academic exercise, the glory/shame as the case maybe goes to the two of them who append their signature first.
The university as a business: The professor provides direction proportional to the needs of the student helping them find the answers they need without providing those answers to help the student grow.
University as career path: The student might be hoping that a university degree is a path to a better life. The university does not advertise get a degree and become homeless. Yet there are so many graduates that they cannot all become professors unless we start building many more universities. So the supervisor could continue advising the student past their degree. How to apply for jobs or introducing them to key people who may also help in this process.
The word "to supervise" is enough to show that he/she is like a quality manager. Without supervision or proper guide, one is bound to erroneously mislead scientific community even without his knowledge. One may equally repeat errors thousand times without knowledge of it.
