If you find a recent publication (say work of 2015) that has some interesting sections credited to an author (original owner, say work of 1981) and you tried to access the original work/contents and you couldnt find it i.e maybe deleted or huge prize tag on it that you may not afford. How do you cite such a line of statement? Do you pretend to credit it to the authors of the recent publication? Does it constitute plagiarism to do so? Whats the way forward?
You simply say "According to B (2015), A (1981) writes " ... ",
or the other way around: A (1981) writes "...", as cited in B,(2015).
It is wrong to pretend that you have accessed A (1981) if you have not done so.

Besides you can also consult the guidelines of Referencing style you have to follow for your work. The guidelines for each referencing style take all the aspects of 'citing' and 'referencing' into consideration.

The practice of writing citation as mentioned by Prof. Ian as above examples reflects the author has no access to the older reference (A). Normally if the author has the access to A, s/he will simply write "According to A (1981),...."
Agreed to Prof Ian that "It is wrong to pretend that you have accessed A (1981) if you have not done so".
Maybe, further question is: Do we need to list A in the reference list? Or B is enough?
"Citation incorrectness" will always be hot issues among thesis examiners in academic writings. It will create continuous mistakes if the following authors who cite the "incorrect" paper pretend that they have read the original version. Is there any rule to limit the number of this kind of citation?
How about a rule of a maximum of one indirect citation per paper or thesis, where it is unavoidable?
