Mr. Sandipan, I think you have define the convergence criteria for the problem that is facing by you. For example after completing the analysis steps, program used to check convergence criteria. so you can set the convergence criteria. The balancing forces or displacement will be carried forward to the next load step but some time it show an error to correct that the convergence criteria by maximum 10 % error is acceptable in geotechncial engineering. Also, i recommend you to go through ABAQUS manual for better understanding in this regard..all the best..

there are a couple of things you can do. First check the discretisation. Here you should be aware that you have two discretizations, of space and time. So simply try to solve the problem on a finer mesh. In this case, if you use a solver with automatic time steps, the discretisation in time will be fiener too. Anotherr reason for the error could be a too large time step. So you check your log-file and to see, if the convergency issue appears after some large time steps compared to the time steps before. Than you can just set the maximum time step to be smaller :).
