The current global pandemic, the climate crisis, the destruction of the oceans (with plastics, etc), and massive numbers of refugees are part of a set of serious global problems.

It is clear that most states' focus on nationalism and a general lack of support or trust in the UN is rendering global efforts to confront these problems as lacking. What can educators do about this impending danger?

In Canada and the US, social studies education includes a multicultural perspective based on national pride. the time has come to teach less from a nationalistic view and one looking at the world from a type of cosmopolitanism. Conservatives will likely react negatively to such a suggestion, but the situation warrants support for global citizenship.
