Suppose say i measured crack width and length on a column. I have a computer model of that column in SAP/ETABS. I want to put the crack property in that model.
Hothifa Rojob can you please recommend me where i can find the exact relationship? i.e. for this crack width, reduce stiffness by this much. It would help me a lot. Thank you so much.
Hothifa Rojob I am doing visual inspection of a 3 storey bare frame structure, measuring cracks on the beam and column and then putting the crack information on my computer model (SAP/ETABS). These are cracks that have appeared during the service life of the building (not due to earthquake or any external factor). I have been going around in circles for a past few days about how to do this without any good results. Also, i need a solid reference to the method i will be using. Can you advise please ?
First of all, are the columns cracked due to lateral loads, i.e. is the moments as per your analysis is higher than cracking moments ( please note that uncracked columns attracts higher moments)? If that is the case it will be realistic to assume cracked column and reduce the stiffness by 30% (or other percentage, please review the literature, we typically use this for cracked bridge columns, not sure how applicable is that for buildings) regardless of the amount or size of cracks. To account for the actual size and length of cracks doesn't sound a reasonable approach
