Compute the 5 years average of the variables

* gen period = 1

* replace period = 2 if year >= 1990 & year = 1996 & year = 2001 & year = 2013 (the last one)

* collapse(mean) dependent variable1 variable2 variable3 ..., by(period)

After following procedures from Yitagesu Zewdu Zergawu , then applying the following commands to execute.

gen year = period

order n period year sort n period

Then, After that replace the generated period with numeric values, for instance "replace year=1 if period =2000"

then label your number value with time interval according to what was generated from the (gen period=5*floor(year/5))

When I do average 3-year stata was calculated the previous year. for example, my data starting from 1996 to 2019. When I use the command [gen period = 3 * floor(year/3)] and look at the data editor ( Browse) I found that years start from 1995. Why it starts from 1995 while the period of my study is 1996-2019?

Hi Rashmi Ahuja , Issa Hemed and Badiah Eljahimi , the StATA command to genrate 5-year averages for a dataset spanning 1996 - 2020 goes like:

gen period = 1

replace period = 2 if year >= 1996 & year < 2001

replace period = 3 if year >= 2001 & year < 2006

replace period = 4 if year >= 2006 & year < 2011

replace period = 5 if year >= 2011 & year < 2016

replace period = 5 if year >= 2016 (the last one)

collapse(mean) variable1, variable2, ... id, by(period country)
