What reagent/reactant (s) could be the most important to adjust/control in trying to drastically increase the yield when synthesizing gold nanorods? ?

I've mainly adjusted amounts of HAuCl4, AgNO3, and Ascorbic Acid in the past (following different protocols) in both the seed and growth solutions and have gotten decent results.

I've followed these papers (Ye et al. and Wu et al.) with the goal to considerably improve my yield yet my results are very different.
