I have a nickel-iron alloy wire with about 5% iron. I want to get rid of the iron, at least from the surface, without completely dissolving the alloy. How do I do that?
I'm currently trying to dissolve the iron under anodic conditions and high pH.
This thought seems quite impossible. you just need to find a potential that can remove iron from many phases of the alloy. Anodic dissolution is a spontaneous event. No matter how hard you try, the nickel will also be removed from the surface. May be you can try an selective chemical reaction. However, it will be very difficult to dissolve just the iron atoms from the alloy lattice.
Most acids react with Fe and Ni,however, HF, I think, can react with Fe but not with Ni. So take a small piece of the alloy and put it in HF for a while to see if Fe comes out of the alloy.
Do not put HF in a glass container.
Do not use pure HF but dilute it with some water.
