I want to start my project. It involves the use of two-dimensional chromatography. I want to use sample dilution prior to analysis and my solvent is DCM. How do I go about it? How do I know the amount of the sample to add to the solvent? Do I have to order standards when doing qualitative analysis using the GC X GC? if yes, how do I know which standards to order?
Ideally the sample conc. for GC with capillary column should be 0.5-.08 microgram/mL. If you know the weight of your sample, you can prepare the sample of required conc. accordingly

Usually the weight of the standard is written in the chemical's container.
Serial dilution like 1ug,0.5ug,0.1ug and so on always necessary for obtaining a calibration curve necessary for quantitative analysis
But for qualitative analysis, you basically have to know the RT of your product.
Check the Concentration of the solute and dilute it with DCM thereby making it 1ml.
However, it's always necessary to get a standard and standardised the method initially.
Also the type of standard and analysis depends on what matrix you want to analysis.
Ideally, you can purchase a certified reference standard for your analyte of interest. If you can purchase as a 1mg/mL solution, then it is literally ready to go out of the bottle. Use this as-is to establish the performance of your analyte in your GCs, conduct any method optimization, and determine your retention time.
Once you have your qualitative identification established with the reference standard, then you can use the DCM to dilute your samples to a range approximate to 1 mg/mL. Since this is a qualitative analysis, the concentrations do not need to be exact. If this results in an overloaded sample, increase the dilution for the next analysis.
