Hi,
I would like to compute a binary (yes/no) variable using the conditions of two categorical variables, i.e., a score of 0 or 1 on one variable and a score of 2 on another.
How do I do this? I have tried using the 'if' function but cannot seem to ensure it satisfies both conditions at the same time.

Dear @Curtin If I could get your query correctly, you have categorical data with four categories 0-3 and you wish to make it binary variable 0 and 1. If this is the case, you need to recode your variable into a different variable. Recode 0-1 as 0 and 2-3 as 1. Refer to the below link to learn how to do it in SPSS.

Thanks for the reply, however I have two categorical variables (one is scored from 1-2, and the other is scored from 0-5). I want to make a new variable that satisfies two conditions: a score of 2 in the first variable and a score of 0-1 in the second variable.
Does that make more sense? Therefore, I don't think simply recoding works here as I need to combine responses from these two variables.
