The eye produces fluid in its middle chamber which leaves through a drainage network to the blood stream. In the case of glaucoma, this drainage is blocked. The excess fluid increases up the intraocular pressure and can destroy the optic nerve gradually. In the case of diabetic retinopathy, there can be an abnormal vessel growth that leads to the blockage of the drainage network hence allowing excess fluids and increasing the risk if glaucoma.
